Introduction
As an introduction to the multiple forms of investigative inquiry, creative experimentation and discipline specifi c production techniques that architects work within to develop effective design processes, students of this introductory master of architecture core studio explored a range of working methods and approaches to design. Through a series of departures realized throughout the semester, students addressed ideas of light and form, material and technique, and space in context with a notational approach to design. Emphasis was placed on iteration through drawing and its companion work in physical making/modeling/testing, as these are understood to be architecture’s fundamental media. Through investigative and completed work, this core studio sought to demonstrate that material processes as well as spatial and formal expressions can form the basis of a synthetic approach to architecture.
