Introduction
Studio 100A focuses on architecture at the building scale. Through a series of projects dealing with formal analysis, urban intervention, and the design of a library, students expanded both the scope and depth of their knowledge on research, analysis, program, space and form. For their fi nal project, 100A students were asked to investigate the nature of the contemporary library in their designs of a new San Francisco Branch Library within it’s Tenderloin neighborhood. Libraries have increasingly become an intensifi ed place for public interaction and social encounter. Students were asked to place special emphasis on studies in the relationship between solid and void, and to consider this aspect of the contemporary library program, which requires additional informal gathering spaces, computer terminal access points, community meeting rooms, children’s nooks and quiet play areas, video and DVD borrowing, auditoriums, and reading gardens..
